Electroconvulsive therapy or ECT works by electrically inducing seizures for therapeutic effects. This is done only when all other treatments are not serving. This treatment is very immediate and effective and is very helpful in situation such as catatonic depression where in the patient is failing to take any kinds of food which can ultimately result to death. It is also very helpful in situation where suicide is seen as hope to come out from a depression. ECT is only used when situations are bordering on hopeless. This is because outcome of ECT is not yet fully studied.
Psychotherapy, biological treatments, and electroconvulsive therapies are just part of depression treatments that can help people with depression. There are also alternative means of treating depression. Acupuncture, exercise, and music therapy are part of this alternative treatment. Acupuncture helps in helping people with depression by its capability to make the body produce high level of endorphins which makes the body produce a feeling of well-being. Exercise functions by producing physiological effects that help contradict depression. It is also helpful in lowering stress which can be a factor for depression. And finally, music therapy helps by the ability of music to stimulate different set of moods. Studies have shown that there are certain areas in the brain particularly the sub-cortical centers that are reached by music. This helps depression by breaking off unhealthy emotions.
